Whataburger rival heats up plans for new $1.6M Texas outpost

A popular New York-based burger joint is moving forward with expansion plans in Central Texas. Shake Shack is planning to build a $1.6 million restaurant near Samsung in Austin.
The fast-food chain first set plans for the location in late December 2025, but a more recent Texas Department of Licensing Regulation filing is revealing new details on the upcoming space. For starters, the Shake Shack now has an official address listed as 3101 E. Yager Lane, which is within a massive $1 billion mixed-use development currently under construction.
The new Shake Shack will be part of East Village, a 425-acre master-planned community that will bring residential, retail, restaurants, entertainment and green space to North Austin. A Shake Shack spokesperson confirmed to MySA that the restaurant’s Yager Lane address was recently confirmed by the City of Austin.
Its former address, 3500 E Parmer Lane, on Shake Shack’s first TDLR filing was temporary since some parts of the East Village project are still being built. In January, East Village welcomed two new restaurants, Killer Burger and First Watch, and the district has already set plans for more including Potbelly and Flame Broiler this year.
Shake Shack’s newest TDLR also says construction on the restaurant is expected to begin sooner rather than later. The new filing now predicts construction will begin March 1, whereas the first filing said it would break ground in early April.
This also means its completion date was moved up one month from September to August 1. The estimated cost for the Shake Shack also rose from $784,000 to $1.6 million, according to the filings.
Shake Shack’s 3,419-square-foot building will include a quick service restaurant and drive-thru. Last month, the chain also set plans for another Austin-area restaurant in Leander. The chain currently operates four locations throughout Austin, and nearly 30 others across Texas.
